Yuki
Origin: Shimo no Kuni
Current Village(s): Kirigakure (vast majority of clan population), Shimogakure, Tetsu no Kuni, Takigakure
History: Purity.
This one word alone is what has driven the clan in nearly every thought and action for several centuries, and to the outside observer paints the clan as supremacists and racist in virtually every sense of the word - and to a point, they would not be wrong. To Kirigakure's branch of the renowned clan, their kekkei genkai is everything. It was what allowed them to not only survive but thrive in the brutal and unforgiving wilderness of Shimo no Kuni, and it was what had ensured their dominance in the region for generations during the Warring States era.
Those who do not manifest the trait are less than people to the clan's ruling families - failures to be cast aside much as the exiles were in the days of old, with only relatively recent advances in medical sciences and the ability to test for the recessive trait raising carriers of the dormant gene to something barely approaching the level of second class citizens. To them all of the additional clans to arrive and settle Kirigakure alongside them are often only measured as tools to be used in military or political stages, or families with heavy showings of other recessive traits as well looked on only slightly more favorably as potential breeding stock to keep the Yuki bloodline from polluting itself with genetic defects.
To those within the clan, however, as well as the few, rare individuals to be given a look into the inner machinations and philosophy of the people, the word "purity" is more than a simple statement of intent regarding their bloodline - it is a way of life. Clan members are expected to be equally pure in mind and soul as well as body, an odd contradiction to their almost xenophobic views regarding outsiders but one that has allowed them to at the very least remain peaceful and civil with the other clans within Kirigakure since its inception.
Liars, cheats, thieves and deception in general are heavily frowned upon in the clan, viewed as corruption of both mind and soul as they often tend to become habits - likewise, while violence is a fact of life as the family is nearly exclusively shinobi, an excessive craving for it or otherwise sadistic tendencies also tend to draw unfavorable attention. It is largely due to this view that the Yuki clan carries the lowest occurrence rate for mental illnesses in the world, as in an effort to both prevent and treat such corruption within their ranks the family has studied the mind to a great extent, developing a wide range of treatments and therapies for such disorders and diseases.
Oddly enough this has also led to the clan contributing greatly to Kirigakure's medical standing, as their view on expunging corruption and pollutants from every aspect of their lives has also extended to the physical body as well as the mind. While many of these treatments and the mental therapies are kept to themselves, save for what little is offered to the other clans to help secure favorable political standing within Kiri, it has resulted in the clan being renowned for taking care of their own.
As far as hierarchy goes the Yuki clan's structure began as a fairly simple one, but over the last several decades since the founding of Kirigakure has expanded into a twisted maze involving a great deal of politics.
The clan is divided into three "noble" families (Yuki, Toketsu and Fuyu), two that serve and one that rules. One's position within the clan is entirely dependent on an individual's ability to manifest the Hyouton trait, and as a result this has generated several dynasties since the clan's inception during the previous era. The ruling clan is generally decided by simple power and numbers. Whoever has the most Hyouton users calls the shots, plain and simple, with the remaining two houses acting to protect clan interests on the ruling house's orders and policies, although exceptions to this rule have been made when particularly powerful users of the kekkei genkai have emerged and simply beaten all opposition into submission. At the current time the Yuki family has ruled over the Toketsu and Fuyu lines within the clan for nearly six generations, having formed a nearly insurmountable advantage over the other two as far as sheer numbers go, allowing the family's main bloodline to focus on quality over quantity as heirs are concerned.
That is not to say, however, that the noble families are the only ones within the clan, with several larger ones collectively referred to as the Kando house being made of the noble houses' rejects and past dynasties that merely carry the Hyouton gene in the present day - roughly eighty five percent of the clan's numbers. While not completely ignored and still very much viewed as part of the clan due to their potential to generate individuals manifesting the Hyouton trait, their overall role would be considered closer to that of peasants or servants. Their role is seen as supporting the noble houses, and otherwise doing the menial tasks as well as generating a fair bulk of Kirigakure's general shinobi forces.
Below even them, however, are the Sabiremashita - the bottom five percent, members of the clan either exiled or, more commonly in the present day, simply ignored. Composed entirely of individuals that lack the Hyouton gene at all, often through extremely poor luck replacing the recessive gene with a different one, and thus cannot even produce heirs able to wield the kekkei genkai, these individuals are formally stripped of their surnames and stricken from clan records.
Due to the structure of the Yuki clan, however, the status quo is not a constant - as the clan was originally born from a single house, additional noble houses can and will be created as the clan expands. Based on the merits and strengths of particular bloodlines within each house, achievements of particular note and/or individuals with staggering strength or affinity for Hyouton may be allowed by the ruling house to secede from their house of birth to start and entirely new one with immediate blood relatives.
Curiously, Nuke Nin are a topic of heavy debate within the clan, especially in light of their past exiles who went on to help found other villages, with each house espousing differing views on the matter. The Yuki house tends not to concern themselves with Nuke Nin as a whole so long as they continue to follow clan ideology, preserving the culture and ensuring that, for lack of a better word, it is not bastardized and twisted into an "impure version" of clan beliefs - to an extent, this house greatly respects their formerly exiled brothers and sisters in other villages for their resolute and service oriented reputation.
The other houses, however, aren't nearly as forgiving, with the Toketsu in particular viewing it as their solemn duty to preserve clan secrets and bloodline purity at all costs. As such they have had a long history of acting against the Yuki house's wishes in pursuing individuals who have either willingly left or been exiled, or conversely never giving them the chance to leave in the first place. The Fuyu house, similarly, has also had a history of taking a much more extreme approach to exiles and Nuke Nin, although not nearly with the same degree of zeal - to them, these individuals only become an issue once they leave the country borders, risking other villages becoming a factor and a threat to their clan and village's supremacy.
