QUOTE/LYRIC HERE
16 | MALE |
GENIN | KONOHAGAKURE |
APPEARANCE
As far as appearances go, Arata doesn't particularly stand out. As far as his other extended family members go, he frankly could have come from any one of them, with relatively pale skin, the usual black hair and dark, deep gray eyes fairly typical of the clan. His hair, for the most part, is generally allowed to do whatever it wants - after several years attempting to tame it Arata has effectively given up entirely. Having grown to roughly neck length in the back and down low enough in the front to habitually cover at least one of two eyes at most times, with one stubborn cowlick, arguably Arata's biggest reason for throwing in the towel, tending to stand out directly above his forehead.
Aside from that, Arata's build is fairly short, but that isn't to say lacking muscle entirely - more to say, he's compact. While only standing in at a relatively short five foot one inches tall for his age, Arata still weighs in at 118 pounds due to the physical conditioning most genin go through during their Academy years and his proportions are still correct, hinting at further growth to come as Arata continues on through puberty.
Clothing wise, Arata tends to keep it fairly simple, preferring to stick to civilian clothing rather than any of the typical shinobi uniforms - both due to comfort, as well as the fact that it frankly makes it easier to blend in and takes the target off his back that makes shinobi often contend with outside of village gates. Gray, white and red hoodies tend to be favored over black and white shirts, with slightly loose jeans and cargo pants due to their durability and ease of movement.
PERSONALITY
Arata, frankly, is an enigma to most of those in his age group, but not for the reasons most might think.
Generally speaking, at first glance, most people tend to assume one of two things about Arata when sighted alone - first, that he's quiet, and second, an introvert as, try as they might not to, books are judged by their covers. This, however, could not be further from the truth. Arata is talkative - very, very talkative. Many might say too talkative. Sociable to the extreme, the genin tends to make a habit of striking up conversations with whoever might be present, although the reasons tend to vary depending on the individual. Communication, gathering information, gossip, but more often than not and almost entirely the case when conversing with strangers, plain and simple boredom. Things don't tend to keep his interest long, which leads directly into the next thing.
As most people can quickly tell just after talking to him for a few minutes, the other trait that Arata shows quite readily is that he's intelligent - more than just intelligent, intuitive. Curiosity has dominated the boy's life for a fair portion of it, and has driven a lot of his actions, responsible for nearly every skill he's picked up. Cooking, if only well enough not to starve, literary knowledge, basic home repairs, and several more mundane skills that most tend to learn only as trades or by necessity later in life. Conversely, however, is the other problem - Arata's attention does not hold for long. Once he's learned enough to be able to comfortably discuss a topic or passably perform a given skill the boy tends to move on to greener, more intellectually stimulating pastures, and it's only been through Arata's realization that his very survival is likely to depend on his shinobi skills that has driven him to practice them beyond mere competence.
This, likewise, partly explains his interest in people. More to the point, however, Arata's tendency to psychologically prod and poke in a manner that would have most label him as a simple troll. Not an entirely inaccurate description, but more often than not Arata's goal isn't to irritate, but rather to simply see people react. Like many other things they change from person to person, with infinite possibilities - in short, while distractions like books and other forms of media tend to eventually grow stale, people will never bore.
Family, as a separate matter, tends to be rather complicated. Arata, from the start, never had any lasting interest in the shinobi life - it was but one profession, and one that he had lost interest in from an early age after learning enough to sate his curiosity. Normally simply being an Uchiha by blood would ironically rather limit his career paths by expectation alone, but being formally adopted has given him a curious amount of freedom in that regard. Without the last name few would assume Arata to be part of or even remotely related to the legendary clan, and thus the only immediate expectations often placed upon him are those of his own making. Arata is well aware of this, and likewise very much aware of how easy it would be to take the easy way out and do the bare minimum required of him. To an extend this is an assumption that many who don't know him well hold and one that Arata actively plays into, often allowing him a unique amount of control over most interactions as it becomes easy to surprise people when people expect so little, and when the teen does set personal goals for himself it is an expectation that he can and will completely subvert and undermine.
Finally, while he would have been a definite optimist under different circumstances, Arata's rather shit luck, for lack of a better phrase, has long since taught the teen not to expect the best. Best case scenario, he is often pleasantly surprised - worst case scenario, he's prepared, although Arata is a firm believer in the idea that plans never survive beyond the initial stages of conception and are practically useless save for identifying where things can go wrong. That said, however, he is still a firm believer in karma in spite of his luck, and short of very good reason not to will often help people quite readily should they simply ask for it.
SHINOBI INFORMATION
Position: Genin
Chakra Natures: Katon
Specialties:
Intuitive Aptitude: While Arata was never particularly one for the rough and tumble of taijutsu practitioners nor for the repetitive, mind dulling nature of conventional ninjutsu training, the boy still possesses much of the Uchiha clan's famed aptitude for all things combat related - even if it typically remains hidden under several layers of snark, apathy and general laziness. Despite lacking the famed Sharingan Arata still manages to be incredibly observant and perceptive when it matters, and when combined with his near decade of independent studies within the Academy's walls (and all the resources implied) it can make him an incredibly difficult opponent to deal with. Well versed in the traditional properties of chakra, both elemental and otherwise, as well as the numerous mechanics typically involved with classical ninjutsu and genjutsu, Arata typically only needs to see a technique successfully performed once or twice to understand how it is done - startlingly enough, through deductive reasoning more often than not, taking into account the effects of analyzed techniques on both the targets and surrounding environment as well as the steps put into preparing them. While unable to instantly copy the techniques or learn them as quickly as one might were they actually able to see chakra and the more fine details involved with a technique, this deductive ability often allows Arata to quickly and effectively pick apart enemy jutsu and develop effective countermeasures to them on the fly along with more unconventional and creative tools and tactics off the battlefield.

HISTORY
Misfortune, plain and simply put, has been a central pillar of Arata's life almost from day one, although not in the cruelest sense.
Born sixteen years ago as Arata Uchiha, his life began with the single good bit of fortune that came with being born long after the events of the previous era, too young to remember any of the events that occurred during it - consequently and rather ironically, that good bit of fortune was outweighed by their rather early and abrupt end as his father died in combat before he'd even been born and his mother shortly after childbirth due to terminal illness. His early years were by and large as normal as anyone in that situation could hope for, however, left in the care of a close family friend and formally adopted by his godmother in short order. As Arata grew he likewise developed at a fairly normal pace, learning to crawl, walk and talk just as other children his age did, following in the proverbial footsteps of his older sister three years ahead of him. Once speech came to him in earnest, however, the world around the boy began to get quite a bit more complicated as his ability to comprehend the reality of things began to play a factor in his decisions.
While Arata was never truly a problem child in the traditional sense of the phrase, curiosity became a driving force in the boy's life very early on, and it was from that point on that the initial good fortune in being pulled out of the village's hands and put under the care of a foster parent as early as three years old began to pull a complete 180. Wandering off, poking at things that frankly should not have been messed with in the name of SCIENCE!, and otherwise asking generally awkward questions ahead of his years - while not by any means malicious, nothing was off limits during Arata's childhood when it came to simply wanting to understand the world around him. Unfortunately, this led to Arata discovering a few particular truths about his former surname fairly early on that hadn't been directly touched on by those close to him.
The Uchiha, as a whole, were simply different from most of the village. Unlike many of the other clans, such as the Yamanaka who have branched into horticulture or the Nara or Akimichi who had made names for themselves in medicine, the Uchiha, plain and simple, never have had a real life history of that of the shinobi. From the days before the forming of the Five Great Villages all the way to the present day, never once have members in the clan made real efforts to branch outside of their comfort zone. And why would they when the clan's birthright was effectively to excel in all things shinobi related? Ridiculous a question as it might have been, it did bring up rather unsettling implications of restrictions early on in life even in spite of sharing his adoptive mother's name.
Despite coming to terms with that realization fairly early on, much earlier than most, Arata decided not to worry about it when he was enrolled in the Academy at the age of seven, largely to make scheduling easier for his parents and Nanashi. As much as he didn't have any sort of vested interest in the shinobi lifestyle, fact was that it was an easier path for them. At least at the time.
Despite his name being shortened into a nickname that resulted in almost endless confusion when surrounded by several conversations at once, Arata's willingness to seek out others resulted in the Academy student making a fair number of friends during his time there. Rather, there wasn't much he ever did to earn the dislike of others - aside from a few poor jokes, the student's rather unassuming nature and willingness to lend aid to people simply outweighed the bad. As far as mentors went, his questioning nature often led to conversations and topics well ahead of wherever the current lessons happened to be as well, leading to Arata forging ahead of his class in at least an intellectual sense. Unlike many of the skills he would pick up over the years, the Uchiha knew full well that his survival could very well depend on his understanding and comprehension of his skills even if he didn't entirely grasp what the shinobi lifestyle itself would mean, the basic fundamentals and what those in turn would advance to later on - and as such made a much greater effort to stick with his studies rather than simply abandon them once bored.
The year from his ninth birthday on to his tenth, frankly, would prove to be surprisingly quiet, otherwise, at least in the immediate personal sense. Wheras much of his early childhood had been marked by poor luck and a knack for finding trouble, having adults constantly around in the form of the Academy instructors did much to temper that, and for Arata's part most of his attention would be focused on honing his skills and knowledge to graduate. At least in theory - for one who enjoyed the quiet life and intellectual pursuit as much as he did, it didn't take much to sidetrack Arata from his supposed goal. While it only took two years to master most of the required jutsu for graduation, both the Kawarimi and Bunshin techniques would simply slip from his attention until the first graduation exam at the age of eleven. Unable to perform either to expectation, Arata would fail the exam and find himself stuck in the Academy for yet another year.
Not, however, that he found that to necessarily be a bad thing.
Despite the stigma that came with failing the exam and managing to perfect the two techniques fairly quickly once he put his mind to them, part of Arata really wondered if spending a few more years in the Academy would really be a bad thing at all. As it was he'd already pretty much disappointed on failing the exam once - and while Arata did still value the opinions of some it was only enough to generate mild discomfort at home and a few awkward conversations. The trade off, though, was access to the Academy as a retreat and a place of knowledge, even if that knowledge itself was limited. Not that it stopped Arata, rather it merely slowed him down as he found himself to have a rather intuitive talent for understanding ninjutsu and to a greater extent genjutsu. And for another two years Arata would purposefully fail the exam, quite comfortable to milk his years at the Academy for as long as he could "cheat" the system for.
At least until the threat of expulsion finally began to loom on the horizon.
If nothing else the event finally provided the Academy student with the one thing that he had been missing from the start - motivation. Despite having barely managed to remain in the Academy on his academic marks alone, Arata would finally pass the graduation exam with minimal effort towards the end of that year in the Academy, officially becoming a genin shortly before turning fourteen years of age in the same summer.
Where most individuals in Arata's position would've been gung ho and aiming to tackle the Chunin Exams at the first possible opportunity... he was not. More than anything else he was content to just continue coasting along as he had been, although a fair amount of awkwardness would result from being immediately paired with his younger sister - a girl one year his junior but who had already been a genin for over four years after graduating on the first try.
Frankly, few of the other Academy students bar those with training at home courtesy of their parents or some other special upbringing had the kind of skills or talent needed to fast track their way through the initial acclimation process following their Academy graduation - and while Arata was intellectually there, he didn't have much room to speak as his practical skills about matched those of his team mates. That, in turn, meant a good deal of Arata's first year as a genin was spent slogging through the mind numbing team building E and D rank missions that most genin were to expect. While not necessarily a bad thing - as those experiences did slowly begin to elevate Arata's skills to what one would've actually expected of someone from his clan - it did little to grab his attention the way his self studies in the Academy did, and that wasn't helped at all by the fact that while he and Nanashi's teamwork was nearly flawless... the same could not be said of the third team mate.
Bad enough, in fact, that the entire team would be shuffled again after over a year with minimal improvement in that department, with both siblings reassigned to a new team and a new sensei.
RP SAMPLE
As the seconds slowly continued to tick by into minutes and the end of the first hour started to approach Izumi did little to change the current dynamic of the room. All things considered, quiet was generally preferable to most alternatives and she was quite comfortable sitting on the tatami mat. It wasn't often that she was able to simply relax and let her mind wander, and despite the earlier irritation with the overall circumstances surrounding the "why" of their visit it wasn't turning out to be all that unpleasant of an experience. As far as Izumi herself was concerned, anyways.
While she wasn't able to really get much of a read on Kaede - particularly with her eyes closed - there was a general air of impatience in the room, but then again that might not have been the other woman at all. While he tended to remain silent for the vast majority of the time Izumi had always been aware of Saiken to some extent since their first conversation during her genin years. His mood, his attitude, opinions on current conversations, his emotions to some extent just as much as Izumi suspected he was of her's. From what little she knew of him patience wasn't one of his strong points, although she could hardly blame the Biju in that regard if all he knew of the outside world was what she herself did. Point being, though, that it wasn't always easy to discern where certain things came from. It was much as someone could sense outright anger from another without speaking to them, and at times difficult to tell if it was from Saiken she felt such things or another person in the room.
Not that it really mattered, especially after the door to their room slid aside to reveal one of the Lord's retainers.
"We apologize for the wait, the Lord is able to see you now."
Shifting her neck a bit with a quiet pop as joints made stiff from the better part of an hour spent resting against a wall slid back into the proper place, Izumi stood as readily as one might've expected from a person who'd been wide awake. Arms still stuffed into their opposite sleeves and folded in front of her, however, the kunoichi would pause by the door, wordlessly waiting for the other woman in the room to stand up and take the lead. Speaking wasn't really necessary - the expression on Izumi's face, while, neutral and not disrespectful, made her feelings fairly obvious. Kaede was the one in charge and the one who'd made the call to take this detour, she'd be the one at the lead and doing the talking. Izumi was perfectly content to remain in the background and the less attention drawn to her, the better. At least for now. If Kaede wanted something done that required a heavier hand or just straight up violence then that'd be a different story entirely, and likely a request that Izumi would be more than happy to see to.
