SAMAYOU Origin: Kaze no Kuni, smaller nations mid continent. Current Village(s): Sunagakure (Major) History: Sunagakure differs quite a bit from many of the other Hidden Villages in a number of different ways, but none so much as the general lack of clans. Kekkei genkai and other hijutsu are just as prevalent within the village as any other, but rather than being carried by one distinct subsection of the population - with the sole exceptions of the Shirogane and Yougan clans - most of these traits are scattered or shared across many families that may have no direct blood relation at all. Few, however, probably embody this idea more than the Samayou. Their name, literally meaning "to wander", was taken largely from their past as nomads during the Warring States era and refers to a group of families and individual bloodlines rather than any one clan. During that time it was an incredibly common practice of the mercenary shinobi clans to forcibly conscript civilians or smaller families as foot soldiers for their wars, and individuals with kekkei genkai and no larger clan to defend them were particularly sought after for this purpose. During the height of the previous era there had been dozens of families bearing the Jiton trait, many of which had learned to use the release to improve their civilian lives. Towards the end of the Warring States period that number had dropped dramatically to only a small handful, and it had changed them. Many had been captured and killed on the front lines between the battles of the large clans, and many more had gone on to flee the southern reaches of the continent for the barren but safer northern wilds. Those that did remain in the central regions of the continent found safety in numbers, the smaller families seeking one another out and adopting nomadic lifestyle to avoid confrontation with the more powerful shinobi groups of the era. Many of them, seeking only to protect themselves, began taking after the professional shinobi of the time, learning to utilize their unique gifts as deadly weapons, teachings that would be shared among the other families with the trait. By the time the Hidden Villages had been founded these families had developed something of a reputation of their own despite having never ventured directly onto the battlefields, having grown strong enough to successfully match accomplished professional shinobi in combat on their own. With the founding of the Hidden Villages and the open invitations from many, the choice presented to these families was a fairly easy one to make. Few were as hated as Iwagakure in its early days, waging war to bring as many clans as it could under its command. Konohagakure had likewise endeared itself to few, the arrogance of the Uchiha, Senju and Hyuga well remembered, and without knowledge of what had happened to those who had traveled north decades before there was no way to know if it held safety - likewise, Kirigakure was too far a trip to make for resettlement. All that left was Sunagakure, a place that the remaining five families who carried the Jiton bloodline would resettle as home. SUGAWARA Origin: Kaze no Kuni, smaller nations mid continent. Current Village(s): Kumogakure (Minor) History: Whilst the other families chose to remain in the lush central and southern regions of the continent despite the constant warring of other clans over resources and fertile land, the Sugawara chose a different path. Instead, they chose to head north. In large part because of the scarcity of the northern reach's lack of readily available resources few daimyo cared to try and take it, and fewer still were ready to fight the native inhabitants. Those that called the area home were often pushed by their surroundings to fight to survive, even more so than the clans to the south... and for the Sugawara that was fine. They'd no intentions of starting fights, they were looking to escape the violence, and their only long term goal was to both find and become good neighbors to those they lived among - and in the interest of the common defense of that home they often found quick allies as they began to settle down within the borders of what would become Rai no Kuni. It was perhaps for that very reason that the family, slowly beginning to grow after settling in their new home, found the concept of the Hidden Villages so welcoming. While they had long been aware of the Yotsuki as both the most powerful clan of the area and one step short of what amounted to a ruling body short of the daimyo who often employed them, the Sugawara had kept their distance - as much out of respect as fear. The formation of Kumogakure, however, signaled something of a change, a shift in the world where most clans had bitterly fought for generations and typically conscripted smaller families. It was an open invitation of safety, of security in numbers and a stark departure from the previous era. Something that had required definite consideration, and in the end a small group among the now fairly significant extended Sugawara family would agree to meet with the larger clan and see if the rumors were true. Not long after the entirety of the family would follow and prove themselves an integral part of Kumogakure during its early days. While many of the other clans that had gathered within the village were well suited to a life of war, few were as suited to trade and domestic pursuits as the Sugawara were. Their kekkei genkai, a prized trait among even more powerful clans, had long since been used in a variety of ways that would soon prove beneficial to their new neighbors. Locating ore veins, usefulness in smithing, working iron and steel, various applications using more valuable metals in trade. The family was more than happy to work for their place in the village, and quickly forged a close relationship with the more combat oriented Yotsugi clan. As the years went on and life became increasingly stable, however, the family would begin to branch out and adopt additional roles within the village, eventually coming to represent a significant portion of Kumogakure's standing military as children born from unions not only of Sugawara descendants but other career shinobi families took on the heritage of both bloodlines. Twenty years after the formation of Kumogakure the name had grown from a small but respectable one into a fledgling but powerful clan in its own right.
